This profile includes the specific tests to be performed in the Sphynx: congenital myasthenic syndrome (CAT-CMS), blood type determination (CAT-BLOOD), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 4 (CAT-HCM4) and hypokalaemia (CAT-HK).

This profile includes the essential tests to be performed for Rottweiler: juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy (DOG-JLPPTNR), leukoencephalomyelopathy (DOG-LEMPR), and neuro-axonal dystrophy (DOG-NAD).

This profile includes the specific tests to be performed in the Scottish Fold: polycystic kidney disease (CAT-PKD), Fold mutation (CAT-FOLD) and blood type determination (CAT-BLOOD).

This profile includes the essential tests to be performed in the Weimar Pointer: Hyperuricosuria (DOG-HUU), Hypomyelination (DOG-HYM) and Spinal Dysraphism (DOG-SD).

Hypocatalasia (or acatalasemia) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the CAT gene, leading to a severe deficiency of catalase. This enzyme normally protects tissues against oxidative stress. The c.979G>A (p.Ala327Thr) mutation was first identified in a Beagle colony and subsequently detected in pet Beagles. A homozygous dog notably developed oral cavity gangrene with tooth loss at a young age. The disease may remain clinically silent for a long time, which highlights the importance of genetic screening in breeding dogs.
This test is also recommended for the Basset Hound as part of the Flemish government breeding program (see the official program).

This profile includes the specific tests to be performed for Belgian Shepherds: spongy degeneration with cerebellar ataxia type 1 (DOG-SDCA1), spongy degeneration with cerebellar ataxia type 2 (DOG-SDCA2), X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (DOG-XHED) and cardiomyopathy and juvenile mortality (DOG-CMJM-BB).

The PPARD gene is involved in mechanisms related to energy metabolism, fat utilisation and muscular endurance. In racing pigeons, a recent study suggests that certain variations in this gene may be linked to race performance, particularly return speed and ranking coefficient. The CC genotype for the PPARD c.*271C>T marker is the one that stands out most favourably in the study, notably because it was observed in pigeons taking part in a larger number of races. This test can therefore provide complementary information to guide the selection of breeding birds, without replacing the assessment of the pigeon, its lineage, training and actual racing results.

The Essential Pigeon Panel brings together the main DNA tests useful for identification, sexing and selection in racing pigeons. It includes the 17 STR genetic fingerprint to establish an individual DNA profile and verify parentage, DNA sexing to determine the sex of the pigeon, as well as several markers associated with functions related to performance: endurance, behaviour, feather quality and orientation. This panel provides breeders with a comprehensive genetic basis to better manage their colony, secure pedigrees and support breeding decisions, alongside observation, lineage, training and race results.

Included tests:

17-marker DNA profile – BIRD-ID17
DNA sexing
LDHA – Endurance in racing pigeons – BIRD-LDHA
DRD4 – Short-distance performance in racing pigeons – BIRD-DRD4
F-KER – Feather quality and endurance in racing pigeons – BIRD-KERA
CRY1 – Orientation in racing pigeons – BIRD-CRY1

The DRD4 gene encodes a dopamine receptor, a molecule involved in certain behavioural functions such as attention, impulse control and cognitive abilities. In racing pigeons, two markers in the DRD4 gene are tested together in relation to race performance. The combined CTCT profile is associated with the highest average scores over short distances, meaning races under 400 km. For long-distance races, the available results do not confirm a significant effect of DRD4 alone, but a prospective study suggests that the DRD4 CCCT profile may be of interest when combined with other favourable markers. This test therefore provides complementary information to guide the selection of breeding birds, especially for short-distance races, without replacing the assessment of the pigeon’s lineage, training and actual race results.

This panel includes the specific tests to be carried out in the Persian: blood group (CAT-BLOOD) and polycystic kidney disease (CAT-PKD).
