Hypocatalasia (or acatalasemia) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the CAT gene, leading to a severe deficiency of catalase. This enzyme normally protects tissues against oxidative stress. The c.979G>A (p.Ala327Thr) mutation was first identified in a Beagle colony and subsequently detected in pet Beagles. A homozygous dog notably developed oral cavity gangrene with tooth loss at a young age. The disease may remain clinically silent for a long time, which highlights the importance of genetic screening in breeding dogs.
This test is also recommended for the Basset Hound as part of the Flemish government breeding program (see the official program).

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is an inherited disease that causes kidney cysts to form, leading to kidney failure. PKD cysts often present before the age of 1 year, while kidney failure usually occurs later.

In domestic cats the common blood types are A and B, a third rare blood type AB is also known. This name is confusing as type AB is not the result of the presence of blood types A and B. A genetic mutation associated with blood group B in most cats has been identified. The genetic test can therefore determine whether a cat is bb (blood type B), Ab (blood type A or AB and carrier of the b allele) or AA (blood type A or AB). This test is particularly important in cats because of neonatal isoerythrolysis. The colostrum of a mother with blood group B can kill the kitten if it is of blood group A or AB.
