In pigs, stress syndrome or malignant hyperthermia leads to rapid post-mortem changes in muscle, resulting in exudative, soft and pale meat (PSE). Susceptibility to stress is associated with a mutation (HAL1843) in the gene coding for the ryanodine receptor.

Mutation of the alpha-1 fucosyltransferase (FUT1) gene has been associated with a reduction in Escherichia coli F18 infections. The FUT1 genetic variant may therefore contribute to improved gut health in pigs.
