Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKLR: c.693+304G>A)
Pyruvate kinase deficiency is a haemolytic anaemia that reduces the longevity of erythrocytes (red blood cells). In the domestic cat, pyruvate kinase deficiency has a wide variability in the onset and severity of clinical symptoms. Symptoms of this anaemia may include severe lethargy, weakness, weight loss, jaundice and abdominal enlargement.
This test is also recommended for the Angora turc (see the official program) and Sphynx (see the official program) as part of the Flemish government breeding program.
